Paint schemes Posted by: P_Woodworth () Date: November 18, 2010 12:04AM Hi all, I was just wondering if the U-Boats had any particular paint schemes. I know US subs experimented with stripes, black, and slate gray. Was there any such experimenting with the U-boats, or where they all gray, like seen on the top of the website. Thanks, Paul

the basic colors for the wartime Type VII u-boat is as follows: Vertical surfaces: Conning tower and hull above waterline: Light gray. Hull below waterline: Dark gray. * Please note that the anti-fowling paint was also. available in dark gray. Horizontal surfaces: Main deck and conning tower deck: * Black.

Generally, U-boats were painted in very dark grey ( not hull red) below the waterline, and medium/ light grey above the waterline. The very dark grey extended to the tops of the ballast tanks.

Example model shown with optional "weathering" paint scheme. Type VII U-boats were the most common type of German  submarine in World War II. The Type VII was based on earlier German submarine designs going back to the World War I . Type VII submarines were the most widely used U-boats of the war and were the most produced submarine class in history, with 703 built.  .

Type VII U-Boat. First launched in June 1936, the Type VII was not the best submarine in any particular aspect, but it was the most successful of the war and formed the backbone of the U-boat force. Like many other military designs, the original Type VII was quickly modified to provide longer range, better performance and revised armament.

Since your work on U-Boat colors was so comprehensive I thought I'd ask about some incidental miscellaneous items available in the Revell kit and thru the White Ensign (WEM) photo-etched aftermarket kit.. This paint was a slightly brownish red similar to the "Schiffsbodenfarbe (alternate color)" colour in the S&S paint chip cards.

Date: March 13, 2004 02:54PM Hi. I've heard that the instructions in the ULAD 1/72 U-Boat decals have paint numbers for Humbrol and Revell. Can anyone post those numbers. I know WEP has a range with "the correct" colors, but I think I won't use for two reasons: 1 - I want acrylic paint. 2 - I want to start painting this weekend.

maintaining a consistent paint scheme throughout its U-boat fleet. Given that the paint itself changed in appearance as the U-boat became weathered, the greys seen upon late-war U-boats would have varied so much that it might not appear as if the colours used on these U-boats were standardised at all.

U-boat commander SCHNEE painted his conning tower of his type XXI white because he felt that a ligther color was harder to see from the air. So , as you can see there was alot of variations that depended on time frame of the war etc.

There is one photo in particular, that provides a reasonably good indication of the three shades of grey for the upper hull, lower hull, and the deck. It is from this photo I decided to paint my sub in the three Tamiya colours. I am confident that the Tamiya XF-19 is a good match for the upper hull and conning tower.

The Wolf Pack III: A Final Collection Of U-Boat Modeling Articles: The second volume of The Wolf Pack continues in the same vein and includes eight more articles. Once again the general theme is to explore the modifications, insignia and paint colors of Kriegsmarine U-boats so that modelers can make accurate renditions of specific U-boats.

Date: July 14, 2005 12:16PM I read recently a report of some U-Boats in Norwegian bases with varying colour schemes, some were described as blue or grey, one as 'bright' blue and one as black and white. It was this latter that interested me. Arctic patrol obviously, but where all boats operating up there painted black & white?

You may paint any shade somewhat close to the original. With weathering, combat damage and nobody concerned about spic-and-span looks any war machine (air, sea or land) may have when just built will get damaged or patched over in a very short time.
